Jesus has called us to take the Gospel to the nations. In Toronto, the nations have come to us!
THE MISSION
We are sending a team to Toronto, Ontario to serve with local missionaries as they do Kingdom work primarily to the Chinese population. While we go on mission to serve and work, at the end of our time we will leave and come back to our homes. But, the missionaries remain and continue their work! Our goal is to serve in a way that aids and benefits the work there. Even so, the missionaries on the ground understand eventually they, too, will leave. Their desire is to expand God's Kingdom by planting and growing self-sustaining, local churches to continue reaching the chinese population.
A LITTLE ABOUT TORONTO
|
|
A large part of Toronto's growth is due to immigration. Toronto is the most diverse city in North America (yes, even more diverse than New York). There are approximately 200 different ethnicities and people groups represented.
So, while we are primarily serving alongside missionaries and churches reaching the large Chinese population, we will certainly have opportunities to share Christ with people who have come from all over the world! |
The Chinese characters we used for our graphics and imagry is what "Toronto" looks like in simplified Chinese or Mandarin. This also shows the phonetic script (Hanyu Pinyin).
THE MINISTRY
There are a number of opportunities for our team to serve, and there are a variety of ways in which we will serve. One of the factors that may determine what we do is simply, who is on our team! What are the skills and abilities we bring with us that will best benefit the continued work in Toronto? Some of the ministry opportunities we have already discussed with the missionaries are listed below...
HOUSE CHURCH WORK
Working with a Chinese house church in the area, maybe with a park event, with games, activities, singing and sharing the gospel. Chinese love karaoke and this may be a fun way to attract folks to the church and give opportunities to share the Gospel.
WORK WITH CHINESE CHRISTIAN CENTER
There is always something going on at this place and extra hands are welcome! There is a possibility of assisting them with a VBS-type event, spending time in the neighborhoods inviting families to join in the event. Families in the area have asked for more of these type of events.
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCARBOROUGH
Partnering with a campus ministry for "Green Path" students. These are students from China and Taiwan coming for an intensive ESL orientation to prepare them for the school year beginning in September. Our missionaries have been invited by the university to provide "events" so students can practice their English and have activities. Many opportunities to share the gospel with these students.
CHINESE CHURCH PLANT IN AJAX
There are many opprtunities for us to assist in this church plant effort, including survey work (very similar to what we did for the Northwest Baptist Convention in Astoria).
The specifics of how we serve will partly depend on our specific team. Our missionaries on the ground are excited about the opportunities, and they are many!

COST & FUNDRAISING
A mission trip like this includes many facets in the planning. We are working out the specifics of transportation, housing, food, and other things, and our missionaries are looking into some options for us to help keep costs lower. As with all misison trips, we have already begun fundraising, and have plans for more.
Due to a variety of factors, we cannot know the exact cost per person. The current estimated range is $1300 to $1600 per person. Better estimates and details will be given as the team and fluctuating costs are firmed up.

Once the team is set we will set more meetings for planning and training on the calendar, as well as fundraising events.
